OVERVIEW:

Street data is the qualitative and experiential data that emerges at eye level and on higher frequencies when we train our brains to discern it. Street data is an abundance model, focusing on what’s right in our students, schools, and communities instead of seeking out what’s wrong.

This online community of practice, led by co-authors Dr. Jamila Dugan and Shane Safir, will guide you through a deep study of Street Data focused on opportunities to apply the model. You will work in collaborative teams to hone an equity-centered problem of practice, move through the Equity Transformation Cycle featured in Chapter 4 of the book, and practice vulnerability through Lead by Learning’s signature practice of Public Learning. By the end of this course, participants will have a deep understanding of the Street Data model by experiencing it and will be ready to move a Reimagine Plan forward. This series will deepen our collective understanding that data can be humanizing, liberatory, and healing.

Primary Learning Outcomes:

  • Engage in radical dreaming about the classroom, school, or system you want to build
  • Explore your own epistemology (ways of knowing and being) as a foundation for the street data approach
  • Understand the ethos, mindsets, and components of the Equity Transformation Cycle (ETC)
  • Move through the ETC phase by phase, with an emphasis on experiential learning and praxis (defined by Paolo Freire as “reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it”, 1972, p. 52)
  • Build the confidence and agency to engage in Public Learning at a final symposium

PRICING:

  • $3,250 for individuals
  • $3,000 per person for teams of 4 or more who co-register

DETAILS:

  • Lead Facilitators (in partnership with Street Data Coaches): Dr. Jamila Dugan and Shane Safir

Praise for our past institutes:

“I’ve done professional development at school sites, offsites, at retreat centers, and this is/was, hands-down, THE. BEST. PROFESSIONAL. DEVELOPMENT. I’ve ever done. Shane and Jamila practice what they preach. They inspire and model, prod and support. Damn.”

Nina Cohen, East Bay School for Boys

“Wow. This experience was phenomenal. The information was cognitively and emotionally scaffolded in such an intentional, caring, intelligent manner. Thank you! I’ve been teaching for over ten years and currently struggling with how I can stay in this profession. Brave Spaces Institute has given me hope.”

Jeanne Parkhurst, Classen School of Advanced Studies Middle School

“Brave Spaces was a transformative experience — our team engaged in deep listening activities and courageous conversations that enabled us to deepen our community, share uncomfortable truths, and confront historical oppression that perpetuates in our school.”

Nancy Kuei, Capuchino High School

“I learned, discovered, and uncovered more about myself and my own implicit biases in these two days than in the last ten years. But I also discovered courage and purpose. I will return to my building with an intention to make it a brave space where conversations, reflection, and listening drive our policy.”

Carsen Moon, Classen School of Advanced Studies High School

“Coming into this training, I thought I was an equitable teacher/leader, but sitting here… I had the opportunity to wrestle with my practices, redirect my focus and plan for next year. Equity work is never done. This institute revamped my passion and allowed me to realign my focus.”

Stephanie Matthews-Carpenter, Aspire Rosa Parks Academy

“One of the few institutes that were equally idealistic and pragmatic. Philosophical, inspirational, but equally practical with ready to use tool to take back to our schools.”

Gary Rohwer, Aspire Vanguard College Preparatory Academy

“Wooow! What an empowering institute. I have been to many PDs and they pale in comparison. Equity work can be hard, and it was, but Shane and Jamila guide you in such a way that you feel safe to reflect and be vulnerable. Do yourself, more importantly, do your students a ‘favor’ and please attend.”

Charly McKenzie, Aspire Capitol Heights Academy
