Democracy & Civic Engagement: Mock Trial at Oakland Technical High School

This mock trial took place inside the Race, Policy, and Law Academy which opened in fall of 2017 in response to broad student interest in these issues. During the 90-minute simulation, you could hear a pin drop inside Oakland Tech’s austere, historic library. Students sat rapt, taking copious notes as “attorneys” and “witnesses” battled over facts in the trial of The People v. Concha.

Equity PLC’s at Evergreen Valley High School – Collective Teacher Efficacy

In the past year, I’ve had the privilege of supporting teacher collaboration at a large public high school in San Jose. I trained 25 teacher leaders to facilitate an inquiry process with colleagues who teach the same course. This trajectory culminated in presentations of learning a few weeks ago, and I got to be a fly on the wall and even captured the Biology PLC’s presentation on video. This process reminded me of how much magic happens when you provide hard-working educators with a little bit of structure and a lot of respect and autonomy.

I hope you'll watch this video that highlights the power of collective teacher efficacy! As teacher conditions change, not only student outcomes, but student classroom experiences are transformed.
