Greetings, Community!

I’m slowly crawling out of my writing cave where I’ve recently completed the manuscript for my next book, Pedagogies of Voice: Street Data and the Path to Student Agency (Corwin, May 2025). If you follow my blog or Street Data Pod, you already know that this book is a collective labor of love, shaped in partnership with brilliant educators Marlo Bagsik, Dr. Sawsan Jaber, and Crystal M. Watson. We are so excited to bring this offering to you next year. Know that it is filled with stories, small doses of research, and lots of practical tools to shift our pedagogies toward student voice and agency.

The graphic below centers the olive tree, which is our binding symbol for this project. You will notice the Equity Transformation Cycle from Street Data in the upper right corner as the sun that continually rises and sets over our grove. The root system of this beautiful tree shows the pedagogical traditions that our book joins, with great respect for what these thinkers and others have offered the field. The branches of our tree represent the four domains of Agency (you’ll notice that Mastery in the Street Data Agency framework has been transformed to Inquiry; more on that in the book!) And finally, the fruit of the olive comes to life through 8 Pedagogies of Voice which you see in an arc around the tree. The book is populated with teacher artifacts and dozens of QR codes that will link to tools, activities, and professional learning resources!

Here is an excerpt from the Preface of Pedagogies of Voice: Street Data and the Path to Student Agency (Corwin, May 2025):

Dear Reader,

This is an invitation. An invitation to exercise our power as educators. An invitation to center our humanity and awaken student voice rather than uphold oppressive systems that we know are harmful. An invitation to dream and imagine schools that liberate us to do right by our students and society at large while reigniting the spark that led us into this profession in the first place. We won’t pretend to ignore the decades of misguided policies and practices that have served to silence the voices of students and educators alike. At the same time, our desire to write this book is fueled by our belief that such barriers can and must be dismantled: we simply can’t live like this any longer.  Our students deserve better and we know better to than to continue with “business as usual.” We need to remember that we have the agency to transform our classrooms and the systems we work in.

The four of us crafting this book see you, beloved reader. We acknowledge the work you do every day and the courage required to keep showing up in these complex times for education. We also affirm the part of you that is seeking, always seeking, to transform your practice—the part that brought you to us. We four have ancestral roots that stretch across the globe, and we come to you braiding together legacies of truth-telling, justice, and hope. Our own voices have been hard-won. Each of us has struggled to articulate stories of possibility—counter-narratives that nurture pedagogies of student voice—while simultaneously honoring who we are and where we come from.

We’re so excited to share this book with you! Over the summer, all four of us authors met in beautiful Bolinas, CA for a wonderful retreat, and we created this welcome video below as a way for you to get to know each of us, and our project, a little better.
